Evoking the charm of the Parisian flaneur, this atmospheric suspended installation drapes a canopy of shifting color across the main courtyard space at Westfield Topanga Village. Chroma Haze welcomes visitors into the shopping ritual through an undulating field of immersive color values, akin to a provocative window display. The animated, multi-level art installation behaves as a beacon for the space, instilling a sense of curiosity and interaction as guests move around the piece.
Comprised of an array of four sided hollow pyramids, the canopy modules feature eight distinct colors — four on the outer faces and four on the inner faces. The kaleidoscopic effect that these colors generate relates to the perspective distortion inherent in our eyesight. Mixing at different ratios, the individual colors of the pyramid faces create blended color transitions that change according to the viewer’s perspective. The organic shape of the installation further enhances the optical effect as it sways around and above the visitors. Without a single moving part, the installation appears ever-changing with each new vantage point — a luminous surface of seamless color gradiants.
The escalators present a unique opportunity to interact with the artwork on a more intimate level. As visitors move diagonally across the surface when entering the Village, the installation reveals more nuanced transitions of values from dark to light, warm to cool. The overall form of the installation follows these predefined circulation paths. Leveraging these set vantage points, the canopy visually links different levels of the building to the lounging area below and the main plaza and water feature in the distance. The expressive form responds to these key vistas, displaying differing dominant colors at each outlook point. Choreographing an animated and memorable entry sequence, the installation wraps each visitors in an ephemeral universe of hazy, reflecting, and prismatic color aglow in the California sun.
