Glass Mutations was a month long Digital Glass Fabrication workshop where students collaborated withfamous Czech glass design and manufacturing company, Lasvit. Students were studying glass as an organicmorphology, and as a product whose fabrication processes can be applied through simulation in early stagesof computational design. The goal was to find new means for generating glass products that are mutatingbetween functionality of building and materials’s visual effects or it’s physical properties. The research andoutcome concentrated around surfaces, generating complex patterns, and volumes, creating populations andclusters of intricate objects in form of installations, chandeliers and sculptures. Students used Autodesk Mayato model and simulate glass-blowing and slumping (thermo-forming) manufacturing techniques, in early stagesof design, thus avoiding costs of expensive prototypes and reaching higher complexity of glass design.
