In Fall semester 2014, Global AD Prague continued exploring challenging relationship between Czech capital city and its river Vltava. Within the umbrella of speculative design and research, and armed with advanced ecological awareness, five international, undergraduate students worked together with local experts on a design proposal that could potentially reactivate one of the most attractive and yet secluded islands in the city.
During the course of 14 weeks the studio went through various design stages such as analysis of the river’s behavior, mapping surrounding, existing infrastructure and typological program. Students learned new software modelling techniques used in computational design, and applied unique methodology and thinking process to imagine and create novel designs for a specific urban setting of Prague. In becoming more aware of it’s environment, studio made several site visits not only in Prague, but also outside the city and discovered rich and diverse architectural styles throughout Czech Republic.
The studio project was focused on Stvanice Island - biggest island in the city, historically famous for its sports and leisure activities. Due to city’s development in past fifty years the site has become almost unreachable for pedestrians despite its close proximity to city center. Flooding, the other big problem for the island, is reoccurring more often then ever and was a departure point in studio’s design for the new Festival and it’s Amphibious Structures.
The main goal of semester was to develop a sustainable mechanism that allow festival facilities to be reused for different purposes throughout the year, thus reactivating the island and making it more accessible to general public. Digital design process started with topological modeling of various morphologies, i.e. platonic forms and structures and their complex aggregations. In parallel, students were learning special tools for environmental analysis in order to perform accurate scientific measurements and used various fabrication techniques for building and testing physical prototypes.
