According to the analysis done by local advert companies, there are around 1.2 million people circulating every day through Slavija Square and its roundabout. Public transport which includes buses, trolleybuses and trams is overlapped with dens traffic and the current situation, although positively dynamic, is creating a cataclysmic and rough space where pedestrians do not feel safe.
The competition brief suggested the new and improved traffic layout and asked for pedestrian underpasses which would connect different points of the square beneath the ground level. The brief also asked for the representative fountain in the middle of the roundabout island, which is currently disconnected from the public and is only housing the monument of Dimitrije Tucovic.
In the experience of the site and its surrounding, this proposal suggested a different alternative and solution to the wider area. The idea was to divide pedestrians from traffic and traffic from public transportation, all situated on three separated levels. Instead of creating underpasses, the traffic is moved underground, public transport is kept on the ground level, while pedestrians are situated on the new platform which is acting as the connection bridge between each corner of the site and is hosting a market place with restaurants, terraces and a park. The fountain is proposed on the adjacent north-east corner where the existing plot remains undeveloped and unattractive. The platform is design as a loop integrated into the context of the existing blocks and the topographical configuration. The whole structure acts as a bridge made out of component system that defines the aesthetics of the geometry and has columns that offer additional content and vertical connections. There are long and massive cables suspended across the site which are used for power distribution for public transport and the distribution of street lighting system.
As the new development is keeping the dynamic and volatile spirit of the space, with improved pedestrian movement and program, where people meet, connect and depart, at the same time it is creating a safer traffic and public transport solution. The project is also questioning the typical typology of the roundabouts in the city and their role in social environment.
